Optimism
This is a nice little interview with Robert Anton Wilson about the case for optimism.

"The reason for optimism lies in the biological fact that it keeps you happy and busy, whereas pessimism just leads to lying around and bitching. I'd rather keep happy and busy than lie around bitching, but I know this will not convince those who really like lying around and bitching. As Nietzsche said that optimism and good health always go together, and so do pessimism and morbidity, in the medical sense of the word."

So- I'm coming to the conclusion that it's less about the way things are, but rather the way they could be. So there is a certain amount of malicious gratification in being a misanthrope, and it's certainly easier than being an optimist- but it gets pretty boring- and buys right into the game plan that you are bitching about in the first place- ergo- is stupid.

Hmm- that site I (and everyone else on the net) linked to about the woman who rode her motorcycle through Chernobyl seems to have been slightly untrue...

Sorry about the crybaby tone in that last post. I'm just seriously burnt out. But that happens every once in awhile, it passes. On the last stretch of the book- one more week I think. Then we are working on two other books- one for Mark Mothersbaugh (DEVO) and one that is all about the art world crap you need to know if you want to "be an artist"...it'll be really great. in other news I'm learning how to do my site- from knowing nothing about it at all. It's really fun!
This is a painting in my current show by Bethany Marchman. I really am taken with it actually.

Je Suis Ennui
I am in a seriously strange way. I've just had this low level depression happening, that has blossomed into full fledged nihilism. It's partly the war- but things just seem so bad when they just don't need to be. It's frustrating and depressing- and I know everyone I know is feeling it too. I've been making the grave mistake of watching Animal Cops on Animal Planet- christ that is a bummer. Between how much humanity appears to suck, and that we either kill or cage all our wildlife, and cut down our forests, and screw each other or just kill each other- it's just so, so old. Havent we gotten past this YET? Or is this the way it is as life evolves on a planet-that a dominant species takes it over and recreates it.Maybe I'm a ecological version of a Luddite or something- someone who doesn't want things to progress the way they are- maybe my mode of thinking (that our biosphere shouldn't be destroyed, say) is outdated...that man has a drive to transform his enviroment and that's the way it is, and to steer that drive into something a little less poisonous is the only option. I just feel that when the last wild whale dies, and the last great ape is gone from the forests...that...well hell- I don't even want to write about that.

Oh boy- lookit what I'm gettin'! One of these!

Which will turn into one of these:

Yep- getting a new Siamese to keep Monkey company. I'm getting it from a breeder, which is a bit wierd but the only way I'm going to get a purebred Siamese. The cool thing is that this little guy (or gal) will be one of the excellent angular Siamese that look extra sleek and wierd.I can't wait. The kittens are due in 10 days- then I have to wait a few months. I'm giddy as a schoolgirl. Look at those ears!
