"I deplore brutality," he said. "It's not efficient. On the other hand, prolonged mistreatment, short of physical violence, gives rise, when skillfully applied, to anxiety and a special feeling of guilt. A few rules or rather guiding principles are to be borne in mind. The subject must not realize that the mistreatment is a deliberate attack of an anti-human enemy on his personal identity. He must be made to feel that he deserves any treatment he receives because there is something (never specified) horribly wrong with him. The naked need of the control addicts must be decently covered by an arbitrary and intricate bureaucracy so that the subject cannot contact his enemy direct."
Please call Philadelphia officials to demand release of prisoners! Hundreds of demonstrators were arrested at the Republican Convention protests and are now being held in two Philadelphia jails. They are slowly being processed amid reports of brutality, beatings, refusal of medical treatment, no access to lawyers or phones, and detention as long as 60 hours without arraignment. Many are practicing jail solidarity and 150 are on hunger strike.
These activists URGENTLY need SUPPORT!! Call these officials and let them know that you demand the release of those inside the jails.

Bail for one activist was set at one million dollars and for another at $500,000, though most bails are lower. Mutual Aid, which collected money for legal expenses after the Seattle and DC protests, may be doing the same for Philly. They are at PO Box 95616, Seattle, WA 98148-2616, mutlaid@scn.org, www.scn.org/~mutlaid

Please call the Philadelphia Police Complaint Line, 215-686-3991, to demand the release of over 400 people arrested in yesterday's demonstration against the prison-industrial complex, some of them Bostonians.
According to the Philadelphia Independent Media Center (www.phillyimc.org):
"PDAG legal reports that 450 activists were arrested today. 425 are being kept at the Roundhouse Philadelphia Prison. 25 are being kept separately at Holmesburg Prison on Northeast Philadelphia. Activists being detained at the Roundhouse are engaging in a hunger strike, and are demanding equal treatment, that the charges against them be dropped, and immediate release. There are numerous reports of ongoing police brutality...."
PDAG is Philadelphia Direct Action Group.
Philadelphia police also raided and closed a puppet-making workshop yesterday, initially without a warrant. All 70 people inside were arrested.
We try to print a klang tabloid run of about 1000 per month and distribute in tattoo parlors, hair salons, barber shops--places where people have to sit for a while. Readers don't seem to read in coffee shops in Seattle except for Dizzie's out on 90th and Aurora, an ex-biker bar turned biker expresso bar. The place is filled with bikers and locals talking, reading & playing pool; the bartender actually shouts: "klangs here!" when we drop off.
For the last fucking time, ya CORPO-NEWS MORONS--IT AIN'T THE PROTESTS THAT ARE FUCKING VIOLENT! IT'S THE FUCKING COPS!! GET IT THRU YOUR FUCKING THICK SKULLS!!!

"Read Dr. Menlo! Support Dr. Menlo! Long Live Dr. Menlo!" --Craig Jensen, BookNotes
"Dr. Menlo is a powerful and idiosyncratic voice." --Eliot Gelwan, Follow Me Here
"Dr Menlo's site deserves your attension. His site opened my eyes to the still-trying-to-be-defined possibilites of blogging, and it's a beautiful thing to behold, like a cultural hub awash on the sea of information. It looks cool too, his style a breathe of fresh air. His girlfriend, Pagan Moss, of the Sensual Liberation Army, is also cool. Her blog Peep Show Stories documents her life working in the Sex Industry. Very inciteful. There's nothing more sexy than a woman who is completely comfortable with her sexuality. *meow*" --SpankThePlanet
